The N70 Music Edition supports SMS, MMS and e-mail messaging with T9 predictive text input as well as Java, voice recording and dialling and a load of PIM features such as calendar, notes and to-do list. We were extremely impressed with the quality of voice calls, and their high volume means they will rarely go unheard, even in noisy environments.

The N70 Music Edition has an excellent display; a large, clear and crisp 2.1-inch screen with 262,000 colour support. Images were a joy to view, video calling was clear and video playback using the supplied RealPlayer software was also displayed well. The N70 Music Edition features Nokia’s ‘active standby screen’, which allows users to easily select their most frequently used functions without having to navigate through the phones menu. The default items on the N70 Music Edition include Contacts, Log, Profiles, Gallery and Image Print. Below the row of menu items on the standby screen is a convenient space which displays any calendar entries for the current day. Date and time, currently active profile, unread messages and missed calls are also displayed on the active standby screen.

The N70 unit we tested with was supplied to us by Vodafone, and naturally enough, it works on Vodafone’s 3G network under the Vodafone Live! banner. Outside 3G coverage areas, that’ll drop down to standard GSM coverage and a limited subset of the Vodafone Live! offerings. From a technical perspective, it’s a GSM 900/1800/1900 phone. The N70 also comes with integrated Bluetooth and supports Pictbridge printing for ease of photo printing.

The Nokia N70 aims to try and bridge the gap between the business class smartphone with something you’ll be happy to place on the bar next to your pint. Firstly the N70 is now a useable size measuring 09 x 53 x 24 and weighing just 126 grams, it’s a smartphone that’s been on a sensible diet. Its style is best described as professional chic but some may say it’s only part way along its evolution and you can still see the slabiness of the outgoing Nokia 6680. Good use of materials makes the N70 feel good in the hand and the silver bezel around the large screen focuses the eye.

This slightly dubious design is due mainly to Nokia wanting to get a good screen and also a useable keypad on the front of device without resorting to sliders or flips. The only side action on the Nokia N70 is the cover for the camera on the rear of the handset, but we’ll get to that later. The 262k colour screen has a respectable resolution of 176 x 208 and its clever ambient light sensor means that the N70 can adjust its backlight so you should always get the best view in all lighting conditions. To see the power of the backlight you’ll need to take manual control in a dark room and use the screen as a torch, it’s very powerful and there are a number of freeware applications which allow you to do small tasks like this easily on the Series 60 platform.

It should be noted that the 2-megapixel camera on the N70 is a standard CMOS camera, not the same as the Carl-Zeiss-equipped N90. However, picture quality remains good for both still and video captures. The shutter lag has been reduced compared with previous Nokia phones, but the camera still doesn’t take too well to movements during a shot.

The N70’s display is good and clear in both bright and dark conditions. The inclusion of Realplayer, combined with 3G downloads allowed us to test video quality on the display as well. While it’s not quite up there with the Sony PSP or Apple iPod Video (and that’s partly to do with the Realplayer codec as much as anything else) video trailers and music clips were clear to view, albeit a little noisy at full volume.

At the back of the N95 8GB, the fiddly camera cover is gone. The advantage of not having a cover is that you no longer have to worry about the camera accidentally being activated in your pocket, which regularly happened on the original N95.
A minor but noteworthy feature is the N95 8GB’s black casing. It’s amazing how a change of colour can bring out a phone’s sexy side and we think Nokia may have sold even more original N95s if it had come in black.

When we look at N95 8GB from its left-hand side, we see that it’s an exact replica of the original, save for the absence of a memory card slot. The phone’s right, upper and lower part have not undergone any change and the arrangement of the keys and the connectors is identical with that of N95.The positioning of the camera has not changed, either: it is in the upper part of the phone’s back. The difference, however, is that the flash is under the lens and not on the right-hand side, like in N95. Another feature that is easy to notice is the lack of lens cover, which is probably due to the fact that Nokia have replaced the former 940 m?h battery with a new and thicker 1200 m?h one.

The ‘dual slider’ concept remains. The number pad slides out of one end, and out of the other, a bank of four buttons for controlling music playback. I wasn’t bowled over by the concept last time round and it doesn’t grab me much this time either, but as before, you can use these buttons to control music playback when you are in applications other than the music player, which could be handy.
As a quad-band 3G handset with front facing camera for video calling, the N95 8GB is nothing special. Nor does the 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss optics-toting main camera have the ‘wow’ factor it once did as there are plenty of 5-megapixel cameras on phones these days.

The Nokia N95 8GB has a larger screen, and in reality the 0.2″ do make a difference. The display truly looks larger than you might guess. The QVGA resolution stays the same and is adequate for providing great picture quality, especially when combined with the 16.7 million color support. Other benefits of Nokia N95 8GB over its predecessor is the doubled RAM, which makes the phone faster, even with more applications running in background. The card slot however has been ditched and this might seem perfectly coherent with the 8GB of storage space provided. On the other hand, a card slot can be very useful as a file transfer medium. Though not so frequently used, it’s worth having data transfer options. Another advantage of Nokia N95 8GB is the notably better battery life. Short battery life was probably the most criticized feature of the original N95, some heavy users reporting to have been forced to recharge a few times a day. Now, with the 1200 mAh and the demand-paging feature enabled, the Nokia N95 8GB is a real step up. The fact that only the most essential parts of the programs are loaded in the RAM memory with the rest remaining on the mass or phone memory until it is needed reduces the memory-needs of the phone and therefore increase the battery life. However, it is not all milk and honey for the Nokia N95-2. The spoon of tar is the removed camera lens cover. The newly released phone relies only on a slight recess for camera lens protection from dirt and smudgy fingers.

Nokia has really pushed the boat out with its marketing of the swish new N95. You’d be hard pressed not to have seen an advert or two boasting the wide array of features and capabilities of the phone as a ‘total mobile solution’.

After a quick look at the specs it’s not hard to see why: the most notable of inclusions is the presence of a built-in GPS receiver, the first phone of its kind to have one. There’s also a 5-megapixel digital camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and powerful multimedia support that compares nicely to modern multimedia players.

The N95 is a 3G phone, so above the screen sits the customary videocall camera. Alongside that is a light sensor and the earpiece. Below the screen is a typical slider-phone control cluster: five-way navigation key surrounded by not one but two Menu keys, soft-menu buttons, call make and break buttons.

The N95 is silver-look plastic, set in a wraparound burgundy rubber-texture piece. The red sides are home to the two stereo speakers, camera controls, volume rocker switch, MicroSD slot - under, for once, a cover that’s easy to open - infrared port and AV output. On the back is the autofocus camera and Carl Zeiss lens under a manually opened cover. You’ll find the new, skinny style power socket and a mini USB port on the phone’s base.

The Nokia N95 is a 3G Smartphone which comes is a clever two way slider opening mechanism. The front of the N93i includes a mirrored finish with a hidden LCD screen that looks very impressive, but we can’t help but feel that it will be covered with scratches in no time. The keypad comprises a flat metal surface with well-spaced buttons, while the rest of the N93i is finished in silver plastic with a contrasting dark grey surface used on the underside. The most striking element, however, is the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar autofocus lens as used in Sony’s very successful slim range of digital cameras.

The integrated digital camera allows you to record high-quality videos in MP4 format at 30 frames per second and with 640 x 480 resolution. There’s 3x optical zoom and up to 8x digital, and at the highest quality, the 1GB SD card should allow roughly 45 minutes of recording. With this much storage on board, you can easily store over 500 still images at a maximum 2048 x 1536 resolution.

The phone comes with 50 Mbytes of internal memory & the user can add a MicroSD™ memory card to expand the memory capabilities to suit their storage needs.
