Nokia presented its 6030 model as an entry into the low middle class category in March, just before the CeBIT fair. The main advantage of this phone is its design and price. What it will not bewilder customers with is its functions, for which an explanation is also at hand - Nokia 6030 is directed at the group of less-pretentious users, who are expected to get satisfaction of a common basic functional menu.
The low middle class phones are very important for manufacturers, even though it does not seem so at first sight. Parents have already become used to equipping their children with mobiles at a relatively young age, so any simple control together with a reasonable price is equal to a boom. Common mobile phone users form the other group that will surely appreciate these same features. There is no need of megapixels here and memory cards appear to be unnecessary.
The Nokia 6030 is yet another of Nokia’s basic phones, primarily for those who just want a phone that works. Devoid of fancy features such as a camera, a music player, and Bluetooth, the Nokia 6030 is intended only for making phone calls. It retails for an incredibly low $19.99, but if you sign up for a two-year contract with Cingular Wireless, you can get the phone for free.
The Nokia 6030 is basic not only in terms of functionality but also in its design. Measuring 4 by 1.7 by 0.7 inches and weighing 3.17 ounces, the 6030 is a tad bulky and has a simple candy bar design. Yet, it does have smooth, rounded corners and a sleek black and silver color scheme that adds style to its otherwise basic appearance. The display isn’t much to look at, however, with its 65,536-color palette and small 1.5-inch-diagonal stature. Although you can’t change the font size, you can change the display’s contrast.
On the positive side, this is a good-looking phone, with an appearance more like a top-end business phone. The keypad is well designed and functional, with a nice 4-way scroll key, and configurable right and left soft keys. The keypad does suffer a little from Nokia’s habit of making keypads “cool”, but it’s perfectly functional. All of the basics are here, plus a couple of extras like the FM radio and integrated handsfree speaker. The display has 65k colours and is better than many of its competitors.
On the negative side, the 6030 seems to be rather pricey for what you get. For the same money you might have expected some decent connectivity (the 6030 has none - not even cable or infra-red), triband and even a camera. The 6030 has none of these features. It’s not even that lightweight, considering that it has so little functionality. However, if you’re a Nokia fan looking for a phone that costs less than £100 and doesn’t have a camera, then this is as good a choice as any
